Background of the Study
Zamfara State, located in northwestern Nigeria, has faced significant security challenges due to the activities of armed bandits and insurgent groups. In response to these security threats, the Nigerian military has conducted a series of operations aimed at restoring peace and order. However, the impact of these military operations on human rights has been a subject of concern, with reports of civilian casualties, arbitrary arrests, and other human rights violations.
The balance between ensuring national security and protecting the rights of civilians is a delicate issue, particularly in conflict zones like Zamfara. This study aims to assess the human rights implications of military operations in the region, with a focus on the experiences of civilians caught in the crossfire.
Statement of the Problem
While the military operations in Zamfara have been aimed at curbing violence and restoring law and order, there have been growing concerns regarding the human rights abuses associated with these operations. Civilians have reported being subjected to unlawful detentions, forced displacement, and violations of their right to life. This study aims to explore the extent to which military operations have affected human rights in Zamfara and to provide recommendations for mitigating such violations.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on military operations conducted in Zamfara State. Limitations include the difficulty in obtaining accurate data due to the sensitive nature of military operations and potential biases in reporting by military officials and civilian witnesses.
